I have almost forgotten this picture that I have taken last summer in Shanghai. It was a vending machine by the walkway near the Shanghai Commercial District. All you need to do is to slot in your ID card and then key in the number that correspond to the book that you have chosen. The conveyor in the machine will get you the book and you retrieve them from the slot underneath the terminal. Just like an ATM machine.
But that’s not the point about convenience. It is about the level of maintenance effort that has gone in. The shelves are well stocked, books are in good order and the machine works! Being placed in the open I think it is good to say that the people in Shanghai are learned lot. Randomly, I don’t see vandalism and that’s something to be proud of.
Having this machine in my country? Don’t try!
